Department of Law – Human Rights

Advancing Justice, Dignity, and Equality in a Globalized World
The Department of Law – Human Rights at Harvard College UK is dedicated to developing the next generation of human rights advocates, legal professionals, and policymakers. In an era of persistent global challenges—from armed conflicts and migration crises to discrimination and climate injustice—our programs provide students with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary to defend and promote human rights at local, national, and international levels. We foster a critical understanding of the legal frameworks and political mechanisms that protect fundamental freedoms.

Students engage with international human rights law, humanitarian law, refugee law, and regional systems of protection, particularly the European Convention on Human Rights. The curriculum examines the philosophical foundations of human rights, contemporary debates surrounding cultural relativism and universality, and the role of non-state actors. Crucially, students develop practical skills in legal research, advocacy, litigation strategy, and monitoring and reporting human rights violations. Moot court competitions and simulation exercises form an integral part of the learning experience.

Our location in London, a global hub for international organizations and NGOs, provides unique access to internships and networking opportunities. Through our Erasmus+ partnerships, students can study human rights law in other European contexts or undertake placements with organizations focused on European solidarity. Graduates pursue impactful careers as human rights lawyers, legal officers with international organizations (such as the UN or Council of Europe), researchers for NGOs, policy advisors, and journalists, committed to holding power accountable and advancing the cause of human dignity for all.
