Department of Anesthesiology

Mastering the Science and Art of Perioperative Medicine and Pain Management
The Department of Anesthesiology at Manhattan International University provides specialized education in the principles and practices of anesthetic care, perioperative medicine, and pain management. While not duplicating medical doctor training, our programs prepare healthcare professionals for advanced roles supporting anesthetic delivery and managing patient physiology during surgical interventions. We develop specialists with deep understanding of pharmacology, physiology, and clinical monitoring who can contribute to safe perioperative care.

The curriculum covers the physics and physiology of anesthesia, pharmacology of anesthetic agents, pain physiology, perioperative patient assessment, and anesthetic equipment operation. Students learn about different anesthetic techniques—general, regional, local—and their applications across surgical specialties. The program addresses management of anesthetic emergencies, perioperative critical care, acute and chronic pain management, and special patient populations. Safety protocols, human factors, and team communication are emphasized throughout.

Learning combines classroom instruction, high-fidelity simulation using advanced patient manikins, and clinical observations in operating theater environments. Our partnerships with NHS anesthesia departments and pain management services provide exposure to clinical practice. Graduates are prepared for roles as anesthesia assistants, physician associates in anesthesia, perioperative practitioners, and pain management specialists, or for further training in medicine or anesthesia nursing, contributing to vital perioperative patient care.
